Waterproof Dog Coats: Do They Actually Work?

Do Dogs Actually Need Coats?

Not all dogs need coats. Double-coated breeds like Labradors, Huskies and German Shepherds have natural waterproofing and insulation. But thin-coated breeds (Whippets, Greyhounds, Vizslas), small dogs, elderly dogs and dogs with health conditions genuinely benefit from protection in cold, wet weather.

If your dog shivers, curls up tightly, lifts paws or is reluctant to go outside in rain, they would benefit from a coat. If your dog is wet through in minutes and takes hours to dry, a waterproof coat saves time and keeps them comfortable.

What Makes a Coat Genuinely Waterproof

Look for coats with taped seams, waterproof zips and a hydrostatic head rating of at least 5,000mm. Many coats labelled "waterproof" are actually only water-resistant and soak through after 15 minutes of heavy rain.

Breathability matters too. A coat that keeps water out but traps moisture inside leaves your dog clammy and uncomfortable. Good coats use breathable membranes that allow sweat to escape while blocking rain.

Getting the Right Fit

Measure your dog's back length (base of neck to base of tail), chest girth (widest point around the ribcage) and neck circumference. A well-fitting coat should not restrict movement, rub under the armpits or hang loose enough to catch on branches.

Most dogs tolerate coats well once used to them. Introduce gradually with short wearing sessions and positive reinforcement. Some dogs initially resist but accept coats once they associate them with going outside.

Care and Maintenance

Reproofing is essential. Most waterproof coats lose their water-repellent finish over time. Wash according to the manufacturer's instructions and apply a spray-on reproofing treatment every few months. Hang dry rather than tumble dry.
