10 Tips for Safe Off-Lead Walking

Off-lead walking is one of the greatest joys of dog ownership, but it comes with responsibilities. Here are our top 10 tips for keeping your dog safe while enjoying the freedom of off-lead walks.

1. Start with Recall Training

Before even considering letting your dog off-lead, ensure they have a rock-solid recall. Practice in a secure, enclosed area first, gradually increasing distractions.

2. Choose Your Location Wisely

Not all walks are suitable for off-lead dogs. Avoid areas near busy roads, livestock, or cliff edges. Start with enclosed parks or beaches.

3. Read Your Dog's Body Language

Learn to read when your dog is about to chase, become distracted, or feel uncomfortable. Early intervention prevents problems.

4. Carry High-Value Treats

Always have something more exciting than whatever your dog might find. Cheese, chicken, or liver treats work brilliantly for recall.

5. Use a Long Line First

A 10-metre training line gives your dog the feeling of freedom while you maintain control. It's perfect for practising recall in open spaces.

6. Respect Other Dogs and People

Not everyone wants your dog running up to them. Always call your dog back when you see other walkers, especially those with dogs on leads.

7. Be Aware of Seasonal Hazards

Ground-nesting birds in spring, adders in summer, fallen conkers in autumn - know the seasonal risks in your area.

8. Ensure Your Dog is Microchipped

It's a legal requirement in the UK and your safety net if your dog ever runs off.

9. Keep ID Tags Updated

A collar with an up-to-date ID tag is legally required when your dog is in a public place.

10. Know When to Use the Lead

Sometimes the lead is the safest option. Near roads, livestock, other dogs on leads, or in areas with restrictions - clip that lead on without hesitation.
