Route Overview

The Whitby Abbey and Cliff Walk is a dramatic 2.5-mile coastal walk that combines one of England's most atmospheric historic ruins with sweeping views along the North Yorkshire coastline. Starting from the harbour at the foot of the famous 199 steps, the route climbs to the clifftop ruins of Whitby Abbey before following the Cleveland Way northward along the headland. The cliffs drop sheer to the sea below, and on clear days you can see north to the cliffs of Sandsend and south towards Robin Hood's Bay.

After exploring the abbey precinct - dogs are welcome in the grounds though not inside the English Heritage buildings - the route continues along well-maintained cliff paths with short grass underfoot. The path is clear and well signed as part of the Cleveland Way National Trail. The return takes you back through the old town's narrow streets, past the parish church of St Mary, and down the 199 steps to the harbour.

This is a walk rich in atmosphere. The abbey ruins are hauntingly beautiful against the sky, and the clifftop path feels wild and exposed even though the town is never far away. Seabirds wheel overhead, the salt air is invigorating, and the combination of history and landscape is quintessentially Yorkshire.

Dog-Friendly Features

Dogs are welcome on the clifftop paths and in the abbey grounds, though they must be on leads near the cliff edge and within the abbey precinct. The old town streets are bustling with visitors, so leads are advisable there too. There are no specific off-lead areas on this route, though well-controlled dogs can enjoy some freedom on the wider grassy sections of the clifftop. Several of Whitby's harbourside cafes and pubs welcome dogs, making post-walk refreshments easy to arrange. Water bowls are often set out by dog-friendly businesses.

Getting There & Parking

Whitby has several public car parks. The Church Street car park (YO22 4DE) is closest to the 199 steps and the start of the walk. Alternatively, the large Marina car park offers more spaces. Whitby is served by rail from Middlesbrough on the Esk Valley line, and by bus from Scarborough and Middlesbrough.

Whitby is atmospheric in every season. Summer brings long days and lively harbourside activity. Autumn and winter offer dramatic skies and powerful seas - wrap up warmly and enjoy the wild beauty. Spring brings nesting seabirds to the cliffs. The 199 steps can be icy in winter, so take care. Wind is a constant companion on the clifftop, so pack layers regardless of the forecast.
