Bantham Beach
Kingsbridge, Devon
Dogs on leads on main beach July-August during daytime. Off-lead rest of year.
Beach Overview
Bantham is a privately owned beach on the South Devon coast where the River Avon meets the sea. The beach is a sweep of golden sand backed by wild dunes and the rolling green hills of the South Hams. It has a wonderfully unspoilt character, with no buildings on the beach itself and access controlled to prevent overcrowding.
Why Dogs Love It
The wide, clean sand and the shallow river estuary make Bantham ideal for dogs. The River Avon provides calm, shallow water for dogs who prefer gentler swimming than the open sea, while the main beach offers surf for more adventurous dogs. The dunes behind the beach are rich in rabbit scent, and the estuary mudflats at low tide are fascinating for dogs who love to explore.
Dog Access
Dogs are welcome year-round. Between July and August, dogs must be on leads on the main beach during the day. Outside summer, dogs can run freely across the entire beach. The estate management keeps the beach clean and well-maintained throughout the year.
Facilities and Access
Private car park in the village (charges apply). The Sloop Inn in Bantham village is a legendary dog-friendly pub with a garden. Limited other facilities at the beach itself, which is part of its charm. The walk from the car park to the beach is about 5 minutes through the dunes.
