Rhossili Bay
Gower, Swansea
Beach Overview
Rhossili Bay sits at the western tip of the Gower Peninsula and is regularly voted one of the best beaches in Europe. This magnificent 3-mile arc of golden sand curves beneath the dramatic Rhossili Down, with the tidal island of Worm's Head visible at the southern end and Burry Holms at the north. The beach is wide, wild, and wonderfully unspoiled, and for dog owners it offers one of the most exhilarating coastal experiences in Wales.
Access to the beach is via a steep path from the National Trust car park at the top of the cliffs. The descent takes about 10 minutes and drops roughly 60 metres to the sand. Once on the beach, the scale is immense - 3 miles of pristine sand stretching away to the north, backed by grassy dunes and the rising shoulder of Rhossili Down. The surf rolls in from the Atlantic, creating perfect conditions for dogs who love to chase waves.
Why Dogs Love It
Rhossili Bay is a true off-lead paradise. Dogs can run freely across the vast sands, with few restrictions and plenty of space. The Atlantic surf provides exciting sensory stimulation, and the firm wet sand near the waterline is ideal for extended walks. The dunes behind the beach offer sheltered areas for rest and play, and the streams that run down from the Down provide fresh drinking water.
There are no seasonal dog restrictions on Rhossili Bay. The beach is rarely crowded, even in peak summer, thanks to the steep cliff access which deters casual visitors. Dog waste bins are provided at the top car park.
Facilities & Access
The National Trust car park at Rhossili (SA3 1PR) has approximately 100 spaces and is free for NT members. The Worm's Head Hotel sits beside the car park and welcomes dogs in its bar. There is a National Trust visitor centre and shop, plus public toilets. The steep descent to the beach is not suitable for wheelchairs or pushchairs, and the climb back up is demanding - allow extra time and energy for the return.
Practical Tips
Check tide times before visiting. At high tide the beach narrows, and the northern end near Burry Holms can be cut off. Worm's Head is accessible only for a few hours either side of low tide - never attempt the crossing with a dog. The Atlantic surf can produce strong currents, so supervise dogs in the water and avoid swimming on big wave days. Wind is almost always present, making Rhossili one of the Gower's best destinations for bracing, invigorating beach walks.
