Beach Overview

West Wittering Beach is one of the south coast's premier sandy beaches, stretching for 1.5 miles along the edge of Chichester Harbour with views across to the Isle of Wight. The sand is fine and golden, the water is shallow and sheltered, and on a calm day the setting feels almost Mediterranean. For dog owners, the beach requires some planning due to seasonal restrictions, but the East Head spit - a glorious sand and shingle peninsula managed by the National Trust - provides year-round dog-friendly access to one of the most beautiful coastal landscapes in Sussex.

The main beach is privately managed by the West Wittering Estate and is well maintained with excellent facilities. It is a popular family beach in summer, with lifeguards, a car park, and beachside cafe. The East Head spit extends from the western end of the beach into Chichester Harbour, forming a natural harbour arm of sand dunes, shingle, and saltmarsh that is rich in wildlife and wonderfully peaceful.

Why Dogs Love It

From October to April, dogs have full access to the main beach and can run freely across the sands. During the summer months (1 May to 30 September), dogs are banned from the main beach area but remain welcome on the East Head spit, which offers a beautiful and varied walking environment of sand, shingle, and shallow water. The harbour side of East Head is particularly sheltered and ideal for dog paddling.

The East Head spit itself is a magical place - dogs can explore the dunes, wade in the shallow harbour water, and enjoy the sense of being surrounded by sea on three sides. Birdwatchers and dog owners share the space harmoniously, with clear paths and nesting areas marked during the breeding season.

Facilities & Access

The West Wittering Estate car park is large, with spaces for several hundred vehicles, and charges apply year-round. Prices are higher during the summer months. There are toilets, a beachside cafe, and a shop at the car park. The walk from the car park to East Head takes approximately 15 minutes along the beach.

Practical Tips

Always check the seasonal dog restrictions before visiting. During the ban period, the East Head spit is the best option and is well worth the walk from the car park. Tides affect the accessibility of parts of East Head - at very high tides, the spit can narrow and some paths may be submerged. Carry fresh water for your dog, and be aware that the harbour currents around East Head can be strong at mid-tide.
