A Remote Moorland Inn
The Lion Inn stands in splendid isolation on Blakey Ridge, high on the North York Moors at 408 metres above sea level. This 16th-century coaching inn has been serving travellers crossing the moors for over 450 years. In winter, it can be snowed in for days. Dogs are welcome and the atmosphere is wonderfully rugged and authentic.
The bar serves well-kept Yorkshire ales and hearty food: pies, stews, gammon and Yorkshire puddings. Portions are generous and perfectly suited to refuelling after a day on the moors. The flagstone floors and roaring fires are built for wet dogs and muddy walkers.
The location on the moorland ridge gives panoramic views across the moors in every direction. The pub sits on the route of the Lyke Wake Walk and is a popular stop for long-distance walkers. At night, the dark skies above the moors are extraordinary.
