A South Downs Flint Pub
The Fox Goes Free is a beautiful 17th-century flint pub in Charlton, nestled beneath the South Downs. William III is said to have stopped here on his way to nearby Goodwood. Today, the pub is a favourite with walkers, riders and dog owners exploring the downs.
Dogs are welcome in the bar, which has flagstone floors, low beams and a large inglenook fireplace. The food is excellent and locally sourced, with a menu that changes seasonally. The beer garden is large and enclosed, with views up to the downs. Treats and water are always available for canine visitors.
The pub is perfectly placed for walks on the South Downs Way, with paths leading directly from the village up onto the open downland. Goodwood racecourse and the Weald and Downland Museum are both nearby.
