Snelsmore Common and Donnington Castle

This walk combines two of west Berkshire's best features - the heathland of Snelsmore Common Country Park and the dramatic ruins of Donnington Castle. The common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with rare bog and heathland habitats.
The Route
Start from the Snelsmore Common car park and follow the waymarked trails through the heathland and woodland. Cross the common heading north towards Donnington Castle, a medieval gatehouse perched on a hilltop with panoramic views across the Lambourn Valley. Return via the quiet lanes and footpaths through the common's western section.

Snelsmore Common is a fantastic off-lead area with wide heathland paths and few roads. Dogs love the varied terrain of heath, bog boardwalks and woodland. There is a small stream for paddling. Keep dogs on paths during nesting season (March to August) to protect ground-nesting birds.
