Grantchester Meadows and the River Cam
Cambridge, Cambridgeshire
Grantchester Meadows is one of the most celebrated walks in Cambridgeshire, following the River Cam south from Cambridge to the village of Grantchester. This was the route walked by the Bloomsbury Group, Rupert Brooke and countless Cambridge students over the centuries.
The Route
Start at the Newnham Road end of Grantchester Meadows and follow the riverside path south. The meadows are flat and open, with the river on your left and grazing cattle in the fields. After about two miles, you reach Grantchester village. The Orchard Tea Rooms are a traditional stopping point. Return along the same path or via the Trumpington Road footpath for a circular route.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off lead in the meadows but must be under control around the grazing cattle that are present from spring to autumn. The river has gentle banks for dog swimming in several spots. Grantchester village has dog-friendly pubs including The Green Man and The Red Lion.
