High Force and Low Force Waterfalls
Barnard Castle, County Durham
High Force is England's largest waterfall by volume, where the River Tees plunges 21 metres over the Great Whin Sill into a plunge pool below. This walk visits both High Force and the lesser-known but equally beautiful Low Force upstream.
The Route
Start from the Bowlees Visitor Centre and follow the Pennine Way north along the River Tees. Low Force is reached after about a mile - a wide cascade tumbling over dark dolerite rocks. Continue upstream for another mile to High Force, where the full power of the Tees is on display. Return via the same path or loop back along the high-level route through Cronkley Fell.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs must be on leads near the waterfall viewpoints as the rocks are slippery and the drops dangerous. The riverside path has several safe paddling spots for dogs away from the falls. The Pennine Way section is excellent for walking dogs. Keep leads handy for sheep in the surrounding fields.
Practical Information
Free car park at Bowlees Visitor Centre. There is also a car park at High Force Hotel (fee applies). The visitor centre has toilets and information. The Strathmore Arms in Holwick is dog-friendly. This is exposed upland country - bring waterproofs.
