This beautiful walk follows the River Wear around the Durham Cathedral peninsula, one of the finest urban river walks in England. The cathedral and castle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, tower above the wooded riverbanks creating a spectacular backdrop.
The Route
Start from the riverside at Elvet Bridge and follow the path south along the east bank through wooded gorge scenery. Cross at Prebends Bridge - one of the most photographed views in England with the cathedral framed above the river. Continue along the west bank through the woodland, past the old fulling mill, and complete the circuit back to Elvet Bridge.
Dog-Friendly Details
The riverside paths are dog-friendly with several access points for river paddling. Dogs can be off lead in the wooded sections. The paths are well-maintained but can be muddy after rain. Dogs are not allowed in the cathedral but the surrounding banks and Bailey area are fine on leads.
