Dog Walks in Coniston

2 walks to explore with your dog in Coniston, Cumbria

Coniston sits on the quieter western edge of the Lake District, a slate-grey village strung along the foot of the Old Man of Coniston with the long finger of Coniston Water stretching away to the south. It's less overrun than Ambleside or Bowness, and for dog owners, that's exactly the appeal — you get the same lakeland scenery, the same quality of walking, and noticeably more room to breathe on the trails.

The village has a proper working feel. There's a village shop, a handful of pubs, the old Ruskin Museum and the Coniston Launch steamer on the lake. Fells rise straight from the water's edge, and the paths around the village take you quickly into ancient oak woodland, beside tumbling becks and up onto open fell. For visitors with a less experienced hill dog, though, the real gem isn't the Old Man at all — it's the gentler woodland and tarn walks a couple of miles to the east.

Best Dog Walks in Coniston

The Tarn Hows Circular (1.5 miles, easy) is one of the most photographed walks in the entire Lake District for very good reason — a perfect little tarn ringed by larch and pine with the fells reflected in the water on a still morning. The path is surfaced all the way round, wheelchair accessible, and just as suitable for a puppy on its first big outing as it is for an older dog. The slightly longer Tarn Hows Circular Walk (3 miles, easy) extends the loop through the surrounding National Trust woodland, giving you more shade and a few gentle ups and downs without committing to a fell day. Both options are ideal when the big mountains are hidden in cloud or you simply fancy a relaxed morning rather than a battle.

Planning Your Visit

The National Trust Tarn Hows car park is the obvious starting point and is signposted from the A593 between Coniston and Ambleside. It's free for members and gets busy from mid-morning on sunny weekends, so an early start pays off. Sheep graze the surrounding fields, so leads are essential on the approach lanes, though dogs can be off-lead on the main circular path provided they're reliable with waterfowl. Bring a towel for the car — tarn-splashing is inevitable. Dog walks in Coniston suit mixed-ability groups well, and there are several dog-friendly Coniston pubs in the village for a quiet pint once you're back down the hill.
