Dog Walks in Ashbourne

13 walks to explore with your dog in Ashbourne, Derbyshire

Ashbourne is the southern gateway to the Peak District and an unexpectedly brilliant base for a dog-walking weekend. This handsome Georgian market town sits at the foot of the White Peak, where the limestone dales are gentler and greener than the gritstone moors further north — perfect for dogs that prefer riverside paths to windswept summits.

Ashbourne's compact centre is easy to explore on foot, and the traffic-free Tissington Trail starts from just below the town, making it one of the few places where you can genuinely leave the car at your accommodation and walk straight into the countryside. The cobbled Market Place has several dog-welcoming cafes, and most of the independent shops will happily hand out a dog biscuit at the door.

Best Dog Walks in Ashbourne

No visit is complete without the Dovedale Stepping Stones Walk (3.5 miles, easy) — one of the most photographed walks in England, following the River Dove between towering limestone pinnacles. Bolder walkers can add Thorpe Cloud Walk (4 to 6 miles, moderate) for a rewarding scramble up a near-perfect pyramid of rock. Further west, the Manifold Valley Walk and the Hartington Dales Walk offer quieter, equally lovely alternatives when Dovedale is busy. For a longer day, the Biggin Dale and Wolfscote Dale Walk strings together two of the most underrated dales in the White Peak.

Planning Your Visit

Parking is plentiful at Dovedale (National Trust, busy on weekends — arrive before 10am), Ilam Park, and in Ashbourne itself. The stepping stones can get slippery and intimidating for smaller dogs; the footbridge 200 metres upstream is a safer crossing. Livestock is common in the surrounding fields, so leads are essential on approach sections. Dog walks in Ashbourne suit mixed-ability groups well — most routes offer a short option and a longer extension, and the trails are well-signed.
