Dog Walks in Bamford
11 walks to explore with your dog in Bamford, Derbyshire
Bamford is a small Hope Valley village that gives you some of the most dramatic dog walking in the Peak District without the crowds of Castleton or Edale. If you love high, airy edge walks and shimmering reservoirs, this is probably the single best base in Derbyshire — most of the big Dark Peak routes start within a mile or two of the village centre.
The village itself is modest, but that's part of the appeal. There's a station on the Hope Valley line, a handful of cafes, and a pub or two, and you can step out of the car park straight onto a footpath heading up to Bamford Edge. For anyone planning a walking weekend with their dog, it's the sort of place where you can easily fit three completely different routes into two days.
Best Dog Walks in Bamford
The Bamford Edge Walk (4 to 6 miles, moderate) is the signature route — a short climb to one of the finest viewpoints in the Peak District, looking down onto Ladybower Reservoir. For the full reservoir experience, the Ladybower Reservoir Circuit (4 to 7 miles, easy to moderate) is flat, well-surfaced and ideal for dogs that prefer steady walking over hill scrambles. The Upper Derwent Reservoirs Walk continues north to Howden and Derwent dams. Strong dogs will love the Win Hill Walk or the Derwent Edge Walk, both of which give you high moorland ridges with big views.
Planning Your Visit
Fairholmes visitor centre has the best-placed car park for the reservoirs and is where most of the longer dog walks in Bamford begin. Parking fills up by 10am on weekends, so early starts pay off. The reservoir paths themselves are on-lead areas during nesting season and where sheep graze, but dogs can usually be off-lead on the main tracks. Bring plenty of water — the open edges have no shade and can be baking in summer. A dog-friendly Bamford pub or cafe stop is well worth building in after a big day on the hill.
