Dog Walks in Baslow

3 walks to explore with your dog in Baslow, Derbyshire

Baslow sits at the northern edge of the Chatsworth Estate, where the River Derwent slows and widens beneath the wooded slopes of the Eastern Moors. It's a smaller, quieter alternative to Bakewell just up the road, and for dog walkers with a particular interest in parkland walking it may actually be the better base — you can be through the estate gates and into Capability Brown's landscape within minutes of parking.

The village is built around a handsome packhorse bridge and the 17th-century St Anne's Church, with a couple of good cafes, a deli and the well-known Cavendish Hotel all clustered within a short walk of each other. Most visitors arrive with Chatsworth in mind, but locals know that the real pleasure of Baslow is the sheer variety of walking within half a mile of the village — riverside, parkland and gritstone edges all on the doorstep.

Best Dog Walks in Baslow

The Chatsworth Estate Riverside Walk (3 to 5 miles, easy to moderate) is the obvious starting point — a flat, grassy route following the Derwent through the heart of the estate, with the house and cascade bridge in the middle distance and grazing sheep (and sometimes deer) to keep an eye on. For a slightly longer parkland loop, the Chatsworth House Park Walk (3 to 5 miles, easy to moderate) swings wider through the hillside oaks above the house, picking up the Hunting Tower for a rewarding viewpoint. Heading south, the Calton Lees and Chatsworth Walk (3 to 5 miles, easy to moderate) takes in the quieter southern section of the estate via Calton Lees garden centre — useful if the main house is busy and you want paths to yourselves.

Planning Your Visit

Baslow has a couple of small pay-and-display car parks; Calton Lees at the southern end of the estate is usually the most sensible option on busy weekends and costs less than the main Chatsworth car park. Dogs must be on leads throughout the estate because of the free-ranging red and fallow deer — this is strictly enforced and taken seriously. The riverside paths can flood after heavy rain, so check conditions if you're planning a winter visit. A relaxed dog-friendly Baslow afternoon might look like a morning along the Derwent, lunch at one of the village cafes with the dog at your feet, and a short stroll up towards Baslow Edge before heading home.
