Dog Walks in Edale
8 walks to explore with your dog in Edale, Derbyshire
Edale is the start of the Pennine Way and one of the most atmospheric walking villages in England. Hidden in a narrow valley beneath Kinder Scout, it's a place where walking isn't an activity — it's the entire reason the village exists. If your dog can handle hills and peaty moorland, there's no better home base in the Peak District.
Edale itself is tiny: a station, a couple of pubs, a church, a visitor centre and a scattering of farms. That's a feature, not a drawback. You step off the train or out of the car and the walking starts immediately, and because Edale has a rail station on the Manchester-to-Sheffield line, it's one of the few high-value walking bases you can reach car-free from a major city.
Best Dog Walks in Edale
The Edale to Kinder Scout Walk (4 to 6 miles, moderate) takes you onto the roof of the Peak District via Jacob's Ladder, a historic flagged path climbing out of the valley. The Kinder Scout via Grindsbrook Clough Walk is a more atmospheric alternative, following a stream up through a hidden cleft. For dogs that prefer something lower, the Edale Village Circular Walk (3 to 5 miles, easy to moderate) stays in the valley with farmland, streams and old field boundaries. The Pennine Way Edale Section Walk gives you a taste of Britain's oldest national trail from its very first mile.
Planning Your Visit
Use the Edale village pay-and-display or arrive by train. Kinder Scout is exposed, peaty and often boggy — dogs will need towelling off afterwards, and in poor weather the plateau is not the place for inexperienced walkers. Sheep graze throughout the valley and on the moor, so leads are essential from March onwards. Dog walks in Edale suit confident walkers rather than casual strollers; if your dog is happy covering 8 or 9 miles on uneven ground, this is the place.
