Mam Tor Ridge Walk
Hathersage, Derbyshire
Mam Tor is known as the "Shivering Mountain" because its unstable shale layers constantly crumble, most famously destroying the road below. The summit at 517 metres commands panoramic views across the Hope Valley and is the starting point for one of the Peak District's finest ridge walks.
The Route
Start from the Mam Nick car park and climb the flagstone steps to Mam Tor summit. Follow the ridge east along the Great Ridge via Hollins Cross and Back Tor to Lose Hill. The ridge is one of the great walks in the Peak District, with the Dark Peak moorland to the north and the White Peak limestone to the south. Descend to Castleton and return via the valley bottom or the old road.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs can be off-lead along the ridge, which is open access land. The flagstone path is good underfoot. Leads are needed on the descent to Castleton through sheep fields. The walk is exposed and windy, so not ideal in severe weather. No water on the ridge, so carry some.
Practical Information
Car parks at Mam Nick and Castleton. Several dog-friendly pubs in Castleton including The George and The Castle. Toilets in Castleton. This is a point-to-point walk unless you return via the valley.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Mam Tor suitable for dogs?
Yes, the ridge is excellent for dogs. The flagstone path provides good footing and dogs love the open, airy walking. The climb from Mam Nick is steep but short.
Can I make it a circular walk?
Yes, descend from Lose Hill to Castleton and return along the valley bottom via the old road (which was destroyed by the landslip). This adds about 2 miles.
