Dog Walks in Youlgreave
5 walks to explore with your dog in Youlgreave, Derbyshire
Youlgreave — known locally as "Pommie" — is one of the quieter White Peak villages, strung out along a single main street above the River Bradford. It doesn't have the tourist buzz of Bakewell or Castleton, which is precisely why it's such a rewarding base for anyone who wants classic Peak District dog walking without the crowds.
The village is long, stone-built and lived-in, with a couple of good pubs, a village shop and the beautiful All Saints' church. It sits above two of the loveliest dales in the White Peak — Lathkill and Bradford — and you can walk straight out of the village and be on a riverside path within five minutes. Both dales are gentle enough for older dogs but scenic enough to feel genuinely special.
Best Dog Walks in Youlgreave
The Lathkill Dale Walk (3 to 5 miles, easy to moderate) is the classic: a clear, fast-flowing river through a limestone gorge with a good chance of spotting dippers and grey wagtails. The Bradford Dale and Youlgreave Walk is quieter, shadier and closer to home. To stretch the day, the Youlgreave and Lathkill Dale Walk strings the two together for a proper half-day out. Further west, Monyash to Lathkill Dale Walk and Monyash and One Ash Grange Walk give you quieter upper-dale sections that hardly anyone walks mid-week.
Planning Your Visit
Park in the village, at the Lathkill Dale car park in Over Haddon, or in Monyash for the upper dale. Parts of Lathkill Dale become seasonally wet and slippery on the limestone pavement — not an issue for most dogs but worth knowing. Livestock is common, so leads on through fields. Youlgreave's pubs are genuinely welcoming of walkers and their dogs, and make a perfect end to a day of dog walks in Youlgreave.
