Valley of the Rocks Walk
Lynton, Devon
The Valley of the Rocks is one of North Devon's most dramatic landscapes, a dry valley running parallel to the coast with towering rock formations, wild goats and sweeping views of the Bristol Channel. This 3-mile circular explores the valley and the spectacular coastline above Lynton.
The Route
Begin in Lynton and follow the North Walk path westward along the cliff edge. The views across the Bristol Channel to Wales are superb. After about half a mile, the Valley of the Rocks opens up before you, a dramatic dry valley flanked by jagged rock pinnacles including Castle Rock, which towers above the road.
Descend into the valley and follow the path past the rock formations. Wild goats, descended from a herd introduced in the 19th century, graze on the steep hillsides. Follow the path along the valley floor, then climb to the South West Coast Path for the return leg, which offers elevated views back along the coast toward Foreland Point.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs should be on leads due to the wild goats and cliff edges. The terrain is rugged in places with some steep sections. There is no water along the route so carry supplies for your dog. The coastal sections are spectacular but exposed to wind. Lynton and Lynmouth have several dog-friendly establishments.
Practical Information
Parking is available in Lynton (pay and display). The Valley of the Rocks also has a small car park. The cliff railway between Lynton and Lynmouth is dog-friendly and provides a fun addition to the day. The walk is suitable year-round but winter storms make the coastal sections dramatic.
