This walk explores Constable Country - the stunning Dedham Vale landscape that inspired John Constable's most famous paintings. Flatford Mill, Willy Lott's House and the River Stour create scenes that have barely changed since the 1820s.

The Route

Start from Dedham village car park and walk south along the riverside path to Flatford Mill, about a mile downstream. Explore the National Trust site before crossing the river and climbing through meadows to Fen Bridge. Continue along the north bank back towards Dedham, passing through water meadows with classic Suffolk views.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can paddle in the River Stour at several points. The meadow paths allow off-lead walking when no cattle are present. Dogs must be on leads through the Flatford Mill site itself. The walk is flat and easy for dogs of all ages. The village of Dedham has dog-friendly pubs for post-walk refreshments.
