Dog Walks in Anstruther

2 walks to explore with your dog in Anstruther, Fife

Anstruther is the liveliest of the East Neuk fishing villages, strung along a working harbour where lobster creels are still stacked against the sea wall and herring gulls squabble over the chip shop queue. For dog owners, it's one of the most underrated bases on the Scottish east coast — you get proper seaside air, genuinely big coastal walking, and none of the tourist crush of St Andrews ten miles up the road.

The village is built for strolling. The harbour front is compact and the pan-tiled cottages behind it lean into one another like old friends. Most dogs take about ninety seconds to realise they're somewhere interesting — the smell of drying nets, fresh sea spray, and the constant drift of salt air from the Forth. From the harbour you can turn left or right onto the Fife Coastal Path and be out of the village within minutes, which is exactly what most visitors do.

Best Dog Walks in Anstruther

The Fife Coastal Path: Anstruther to Crail (5 to 7 miles, moderate) is the headline route and genuinely one of the best coastal sections in Scotland — rocky coves, wildflower meadows above the cliffs, and the handsome red-roofed village of Crail at the far end as a reward. It's an easy out-and-back, or you can get the bus one way. For something completely different, the Lomond Hills: West Lomond Summit (4 to 6 miles, moderate to challenging) is a short drive inland and climbs the highest point in Fife for views stretching from the Forth to the Highlands on a clear day. It's an excellent contrast to the coast on a two-day visit.

Planning Your Visit

Park on the harbour front or at the Waid Academy car park for longer stays. The coastal path is mostly off-lead friendly but there are short sections across clifftop fields where livestock graze — leads on there, and watch for oystercatcher nests in spring. West Lomond is exposed, so pack water for the dog on warmer days. Post-walk, the harbour is lined with cafes and bars that will happily seat a damp dog at an outdoor table, and East Neuk Dog Grooming in the village is a handy stop if the coastal path has left your dog caked in seaweed. There's plenty of dog-friendly Anstruther accommodation if you want to stretch a day trip into a weekend along the Neuk.
