Tentsmuir Forest and Beach
St Andrews, Fife
Tentsmuir Forest is a vast Scots pine plantation on the north-east tip of Fife, fringed by miles of wild sandy beach. The combination of sheltered forest trails and open beach makes this one of the best dog walks in Scotland, with space to run and explore in every season.
The Route
Start from the Tentsmuir Forest car park and follow the main forest track north through towering pines. After 1.5 miles, break right on the signed path to the beach. Emerge onto a seemingly endless stretch of golden sand backed by dunes. Walk north along the beach towards the Tentsmuir Point National Nature Reserve, where grey seals haul out on the sandbanks. Return through the forest on the parallel track.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs adore Tentsmuir. The forest provides off-lead freedom on wide, safe tracks. The beach is rarely crowded and dogs can sprint along the firm sand at low tide. Keep dogs under close control near the seal colony at Tentsmuir Point, as disturbance to seals is illegal. Swimming is possible in the shallow waters.
Practical Information
Forestry car park (free, donation box). No facilities on the route. Nearest refreshments in Leuchars village. The forest can be very muddy after heavy rain. Tick season runs from March to October - check dogs thoroughly after the walk.
