Often called the Venice of the Cotswolds, Bourton-on-the-Water sits where the gentle River Windrush flows through the village centre beneath a series of elegant low bridges. This 4-mile circular explores the surrounding countryside, offering a quieter side to this popular village.

The Route

Start in Bourton village centre and head north along the Windrush Way, following the river upstream through water meadows. The path crosses several fields on the well-walked route to Upper Slaughter, one of the Cotswolds' prettiest villages. Its honey-coloured stone cottages cluster around a ford and ancient bridge.

From Upper Slaughter, follow the Warden's Way south to Lower Slaughter, equally charming with its Old Mill and shallow river ford. The return to Bourton follows a pleasant path across rolling farmland with views of the characteristic Cotswold landscape of gentle hills, dry stone walls and honey stone buildings.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs must be on leads through fields where livestock graze. The River Windrush through Bourton is shallow and perfect for dogs to paddle. Both Slaughter villages have dog-friendly pubs with outdoor seating. Stiles on the route may challenge larger dogs, though most have dog-friendly gates alongside.

Practical Information

Bourton has pay and display car parks that fill quickly in summer. The route is mostly flat, making it accessible for most walkers. Paths can be muddy after rain, particularly through the water meadows. The village has numerous tea rooms, pubs and shops.
