Dog Walks in Greenwich

1 walk to explore with your dog in Greenwich, Greater London

Greenwich is the most spectacular dog walk in south-east London and probably the only place in the capital where your morning stroll passes the Prime Meridian, a Tudor palace site, a sailing clipper, and views of Canary Wharf across the river. It's a World Heritage Site with the river on one side and a proper royal park climbing the hill on the other — two completely different landscapes in the same walk.

The village-like town centre around the Cutty Sark has cobbled streets, a covered market, independent cafes and a quietly determined dog culture. Greenwich Market has several stalls with outdoor seating that accept dogs, and the pubs along the riverside are used to seeing spaniels at the bar. What really makes the area work as a dog-walking destination, though, is the combination of Greenwich Park's steep hillside and the long, flat Thames Path along the waterfront, which together give you both workout and wander in one visit.

Best Dog Walks in Greenwich

The Greenwich Park and Thames Path Walk (5 miles, easy) is the definitive local circuit and takes in the best of both landscapes. From the Cutty Sark you head along the Thames Path east towards the O2, with sweeping views back to Canary Wharf, before looping up into Greenwich Park past the Queen's House and climbing to the Royal Observatory at the top of the hill. The summit gives you one of the great London panoramas, and from there you can drop back down through the wooded western side of the park to the river. It's a proper leg-stretcher for a town walk, with a genuine climb midway, and the terrain is mostly tarmac paths and mown grass.

Planning Your Visit

Greenwich is easy by DLR, rail, river bus or the foot tunnel from Island Gardens — arriving on the Thames Clipper with a dog is genuinely one of the best ways to start the walk. Dogs are welcome throughout the park, but the Wilderness Deer Enclosure at the top is off-limits and there's a small flower garden with restricted access. The observatory area gets busy with tour groups from late morning, so early visits are best if your dog prefers quieter spaces. Keep leads handy on the Thames Path where cyclists share the route. There are plenty of dog-friendly Greenwich cafes and pubs around the market and riverside for a post-walk coffee, and dog walks in Greenwich are one of the few London days out that feel like a proper mini-holiday.
