Dog Walks in Aviemore
2 walks to explore with your dog in Aviemore, Highland
Aviemore is Scotland's best-known mountain resort and the obvious base for any dog-walking trip into the Cairngorms. Sitting in the wide Spey Valley with the massif rising to the east, it offers the rare combination of genuine high-mountain terrain for experienced walkers and gentle, sheltered loch-and-forest trails for dogs that prefer something less dramatic — all from the same High Street.
The town itself is unashamedly practical: outdoor shops, cafes, a train station with the sleeper from London, and a string of hotels and lodges geared around visitors. The Old Caledonian pine forest of Rothiemurchus wraps around the southern edge, which means even on a day when the high tops are hidden in cloud you can still get a beautiful walk in beneath the pines, beside a loch, without needing to navigate anything serious.
Best Dog Walks in Aviemore
The Cairngorms: Loch an Eilein Walk (3 miles, easy) is the classic local route — a nearly flat circuit of one of the loveliest small lochs in Scotland, with an island castle ruin in the middle, ancient Scots pines along the shore, and the pine-marten-haunted forest around the water. It's the sort of walk you want to do first thing in the morning when mist is lifting off the loch. The Loch an Eilein Castle Walk (3.5 miles, easy) is a similar circuit with a slightly extended route along the quieter southern shore. Both are suitable for dogs of any age and fitness, and both feel a world away from busier Highland honeypots even on summer weekends.
Planning Your Visit
Park at the Rothiemurchus Estate car park for Loch an Eilein (small charge, honesty box). The paths are mostly soft forest track and easy underfoot, but there are roots and occasional rocks, so an older dog may want a steady pace. Capercaillie breed in the wider Rothiemurchus forest — leads are requested between March and August to protect these very rare birds. The estate is also home to free-ranging reindeer in places, so a reliable recall is useful. Aviemore is a thoroughly dog-friendly Aviemore town: The Mountain Cafe is legendary among walkers for its breakfasts, The Cairngorm Hotel Bar is a relaxed evening stop, and Cairngorm Lodge is a reliable accommodation option. Highland Paws Photography is worth a look if you want a memento of the trip in proper Cairngorm light.
