White Cliffs of Dover Walk
Dover, Kent
The White Cliffs of Dover are one of England's most iconic landmarks, their chalk faces visible from France on a clear day. This National Trust walk follows the cliff top from the visitor centre to the South Foreland Lighthouse, with views across the English Channel, down to the port and along the coast.
The Route
Start from the National Trust White Cliffs visitor centre above the Port of Dover. Follow the well-maintained cliff-top path east towards South Foreland Lighthouse. The views are extraordinary: cross-Channel ferries pass below, France is visible on the horizon, and the chalk grassland is rich in wildflowers and butterflies in summer. The lighthouse (open seasonally) marks the nearest point to France. Return via the same route or loop back through the farmland behind the cliffs.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs must be on leads near the cliff edges and through the visitor centre area. The main cliff-top path is well-fenced but edges can be unstable. Dogs can be off-lead in the fields behind the cliffs. There is no water source on the route so carry your own. The chalk grassland is easy on paws.
Practical Information
National Trust car park at the visitor centre (free for members, charges apply). The visitor centre has a cafe with dog-friendly outdoor seating. Toilets at the visitor centre. Dover Priory station is 2 miles from the start. The walk is exposed to wind and has no shelter, so bring layers.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you see France from the cliffs?
Yes, on a clear day France is clearly visible across the English Channel, about 21 miles away. The South Foreland Lighthouse marks the closest point.
Are the cliff edges safe for dogs?
The main path is well-maintained and fenced, but keep dogs on leads near edges. Chalk cliffs can be unstable and sections do collapse. Stay well back from unfenced edges.
