Dog Walking in Leicester
Leicester is a vibrant, multicultural city at the heart of the East Midlands, and while it might not be the first place that springs to mind for dog walking, it has a surprising amount to offer. The city is threaded through with rivers, canals, and green corridors that provide urban walking routes, and the surrounding countryside - particularly the ancient landscape of Charnwood Forest to the north-west - is among the finest walking country in the Midlands. For dog owners based in or visiting the city, there is no shortage of places to stretch four legs.
Key Walks and Green Spaces
- Bradgate Park - Leicestershire's premier walking destination lies just outside the city boundary. This 850-acre medieval deer park features rocky crags, ancient oak trees, and sweeping views from Old John Tower. Dogs must be on leads at all times due to the resident deer herd, but the park is so large and varied that a lead walk here is more satisfying than an off-lead walk in many other locations.
- Watermead Country Park - A string of lakes and wetland areas along the River Soar in the northern suburbs, offering flat, accessible walking with excellent birdwatching. Dogs are welcome and can be off lead in many areas.
- Aylestone Meadows - A large area of flood meadow along the River Soar south of the city centre, providing natural, semi-wild walking within the city boundary. Popular with local dog walkers for its open space and informal atmosphere.
- The Grand Union Canal - The canal towpath runs through Leicester and extends into the countryside in both directions, providing miles of flat walking. The southern section towards Blaby and Whetstone is particularly pleasant.
- Knighton Park and Victoria Park - Well-maintained city parks providing green space close to the city centre for shorter walks and off-lead exercise.
Dog-Friendly Venues
Leicester has a growing number of dog-friendly cafes and pubs. The independent quarter around the Cultural Quarter and St Martin's Square has several establishments that welcome dogs inside. The waterside developments along the canal and at the Waterside area offer dog-friendly dining with outdoor terraces. The suburbs and surrounding villages, particularly in the Charnwood direction, have traditional pubs that are well accustomed to hosting walkers and their dogs.
Practical Information
Leicester is well connected by road (M1, A46, A6) and rail, with regular services from London, Birmingham, and Nottingham. Bradgate Park has several car parks with charges at weekends and holidays. Watermead and Aylestone Meadows have free car parks. City-centre parking is available in multi-storey car parks. The urban walking routes are generally well-surfaced and accessible year-round, but the country parks can be muddy in winter. Bradgate Park gets very busy on fine weekends and school holidays - early morning visits are strongly recommended for a more peaceful experience.
