Gibraltar Point National Nature Reserve is a wild and beautiful stretch of the Lincolnshire coast, where sand dunes, salt marshes and freshwater pools create a haven for wildlife. This 4-mile circular explores the diverse habitats with excellent birdwatching and wide open skies.

The Route

Start at the Gibraltar Point Visitor Centre and follow the waymarked trail south through the dunes. The path passes freshwater pools where reed buntings and sedge warblers nest, then climbs to the top of the coastal dunes for views across the Wash. The wide, sandy beach stretches to the south with Skegness to the north.

Continue along the beach or the dune-top path to the southern end of the reserve, where the salt marshes stretch inland. Return via the inland track, passing through areas of scrub and grassland. In autumn, thousands of migrant birds pass through the reserve, including pink-footed geese that arrive from Iceland in spectacular skeins.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome on leads throughout the reserve. The beach provides off-lead freedom outside the nesting season (April-August when restrictions apply in some areas). The dune paths are soft sand, which can be tiring for older dogs. Carry water as there are no freshwater sources accessible to dogs. The visitor centre has outdoor seating.

Practical Information

Free car parking at the visitor centre. The centre has displays about the reserve's wildlife and ecology. The reserve is managed by the Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust. Check the website for seasonal restrictions. The area is exposed to coastal weather and can be very windy. Wellington boots are advisable for the salt marsh sections.
