Rievaulx Abbey and Terrace Walk
Helmsley, North Yorkshire
This walk from the market town of Helmsley follows the valley of the River Rye to the magnificent ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, one of the finest medieval monastic ruins in England. The route then climbs to Rievaulx Terrace for spectacular views down to the abbey.
The abbey ruins are atmospheric and beautiful, set in a narrow wooded valley. The Terrace above was created in the 18th century as a landscaped viewpoint, with classical temples at each end framing views of the abbey below. The woodland walking between Helmsley and the abbey is gentle and scenic.
Dogs are welcome on the paths around the abbey and on the Terrace. The combination of medieval history, landscape design and beautiful woodland makes this an exceptional walk.
