The walk to Dunstanburgh Castle is one of the finest coastal walks in England. The dramatic 14th-century castle ruin stands on a remote headland, accessible only on foot, making the approach one of growing anticipation and spectacular scenery.

The Route

Begin at the car park in Craster, the tiny fishing village famous for its smoked kippers. Follow the well-worn coastal path north along the clifftops. The castle's silhouette appears almost immediately, growing more impressive with every step. The path runs between the sea and fields, passing through wildflower meadows in summer.

After about a mile, reach the castle itself, its gatetower and curtain walls dramatic against the sky. Continue north past the castle to Embleton Bay, a stunning sweep of pristine sand backed by dunes. Return by the same route for the best views of the castle from the north, or loop inland through fields for variety.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome on leads on the coastal path and in the castle grounds (English Heritage). Embleton Bay is a superb dog beach with off-lead freedom. The beach is quiet and the sand is firm and clean. There are rock pools at the base of the castle headland. Keep dogs on leads through fields where livestock graze.

Craster car park is pay and display. The Jolly Fisherman pub in Craster is famously dog-friendly and serves excellent crab sandwiches. The castle charges English Heritage admission.
