Sherwood Forest is forever linked with Robin Hood, and the Major Oak - a tree estimated at 800-1,000 years old - may have sheltered the legendary outlaw. This National Nature Reserve protects one of the largest remaining areas of ancient oak woodland in Europe, with over 1,000 veteran trees.

The Route

Start from the RSPB Sherwood Forest visitor centre and follow the well-made path to the Major Oak, supported by an elaborate system of poles and cables. Continue on the waymarked green route through ancient birch and oak woodland, passing many other veteran trees. The forest floor is carpeted with heather and bilberry. Return via the longer blue route through the quieter northern section.
