Stackpole Estate and Lily Ponds Walk
Tenby, Pembrokeshire
The Stackpole Estate is a National Trust property on the south Pembrokeshire coast, famous for its lily ponds (the largest natural lake in Wales), dramatic coastline and the hidden beach at Barafundle Bay. This walk combines all three highlights.
The Route
Start from the Stackpole Quay car park and walk south along the coast path to Barafundle Bay. After exploring the beach, climb back to the cliff top and follow the coast path west to Broad Haven South, another beautiful beach. Turn inland and follow the path around the Bosherston Lily Ponds, eight acres of freshwater lakes covered with white water lilies that bloom spectacularly in June and July. Return via the woodland path back to Stackpole Quay.
Dog-Friendly Details
Dogs are welcome on both beaches year-round. Dogs should be on leads around the lily ponds (nature reserve, otters and nesting birds). The coast path allows off-lead walking. The lily ponds have no access for dog swimming (protected habitat). The estate paths are well-maintained.
Practical Information
National Trust car park at Stackpole Quay (free for members). Small tearoom at the car park. The Stackpole Inn in Stackpole village is dog-friendly. Toilets at the car park and at Broad Haven South. The walk can be shortened by starting from Bosherston village instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
When do the water lilies bloom?
The white water lilies bloom from June to August, with peak flowering in late June and July. The ponds are beautiful year-round but the lily season is spectacular.
Is Barafundle Bay really that good?
Yes, it is regularly voted one of the best beaches in the world. The 15-minute coast path walk to reach it keeps crowds manageable, and the golden sand and clear water live up to the reputation.
