Rutland Water is one of the largest man-made reservoirs in England, a beautiful expanse of water surrounded by rolling countryside, nature reserves and villages. This 5-mile walk follows the southern shore with views across the water to Normanton Church, an iconic landmark partially submerged by the reservoir.

The Route

Start at the Anglian Water car park at Sykes Lane and follow the well-maintained waterside path east. The path runs between the reservoir and the surrounding farmland, with views across the water to the distinctive spire of Normanton Church, which appears to float on the surface. The church was actually raised on a stone plinth before the valley was flooded in the 1970s.

Continue to the dam, where views extend the full length of the reservoir. A path follows the top of the dam before descending to the southern shore. The return route follows the cycle path back through Edith Weston village and along the waterside to the starting point.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome on the reservoir paths and can be off lead in many areas. The nature reserve sections require leads to protect breeding birds. There are swimming access points along the shore, though some areas are restricted for water sports. The waterside paths are flat and well-maintained, ideal for dogs of all ages.

Practical Information

Anglian Water charges for car parking. The reservoir has cycling, fishing and water sports facilities. The walk is flat and suitable for all fitness levels. Oakham, the county town of Rutland, is nearby with traditional pubs and a castle.
