Mortimer Forest covers over 3,000 acres of hills south of Ludlow, a mix of ancient woodland and commercial forestry with far-reaching views from its highest points. The walk to High Vinnalls (375m) is one of the best viewpoint walks in the Welsh Marches.

The Route

Start from the Whitcliffe car park and follow forest tracks through mixed woodland of oak, beech and larch. The route climbs gradually through the forest, crossing small streams and passing through clearings alive with butterflies in summer. At High Vinnalls, the trees thin to reveal a panoramic viewpoint with an orientation table. Views stretch from the Black Mountains to the Malvern Hills and across the Teme Valley to Ludlow Castle.

Dog-Friendly Details

Mortimer Forest is excellent for dogs. Wide forest tracks allow off-lead walking, and the dense tree cover provides shade on hot days. Deer (fallow and muntjac) live in the forest - keep dogs under control if you spot them. Several streams provide fresh water along the route. The forest is quiet mid-week.

Practical Information

Whitcliffe car park (free). No facilities in the forest. Ludlow town centre is a 10-minute walk and has numerous dog-friendly pubs and restaurants. The forest paths can be muddy after rain - boots recommended in winter.
