The Stiperstones is a jagged quartzite ridge in the Shropshire Hills, topped with dramatic rock outcrops that look like the ruins of a giant's castle. The highest point, Manstone Rock, stands at 536 metres. Local legend says the Devil sits on the Devil's Chair, the largest outcrop, on stormy nights.

The Route

Start from the Stiperstones car park on the eastern side and climb to the ridge via the well-maintained path. Follow the ridge north, passing the Devil's Chair, Manstone Rock and Cranberry Rock. Each outcrop offers different views across the Shropshire countryside. The return follows the western slopes through heathland and old mining landscapes back to the car park.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off-lead on the ridge and open hillside. The rocky outcrops are generally safe for dogs, though keep them close on the steeper scrambles. The heathland is well-drained and provides firm walking. No water on the ridge so carry your own.

Practical Information

Free car park on the eastern approach road. No facilities at the car park. The Stiperstones Inn in the village below is dog-friendly. The ridge is exposed and can be very windy. The quartzite rocks are slippery when wet.
