The Quantock Hills were England's first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and this walk across the open moorland summit reveals why. Rolling heather moorland stretches in every direction, with views from the Bristol Channel to the Blackdown Hills.

The Route

Start from the Staple Plain car park on the ridge road and head south along the broad moorland track. The route follows the spine of the Quantocks through open heather and bilberry, passing ancient cairns. At Beacon Hill (384m), the views extend in every direction. Continue south to Wills Neck (the highest point of the Quantocks at 386m) before returning along the western flank with views across the vale to the Brendon Hills.

Dog-Friendly Details

The open Access Land of the Quantock ridge is ideal for dogs. Off-lead running across the open moorland is blissful for energetic dogs. Keep dogs under control during the ground-nesting bird season (March to July). Red deer roam the hillside - dogs must be under close control if deer are present. Several streams cross the route for drinking.

Practical Information

Free car park at Staple Plain on the ridge road. No facilities. Nearest refreshments in Nether Stowey or Crowcombe. The moorland can be boggy after prolonged rain. Bring waterproofs for the exposed ridge.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there red deer on the Quantocks?

Yes, the Quantock Hills have a resident herd of wild red deer. If you see deer, keep your dog under close control or on a lead. Do not allow dogs to chase deer.

Is the Quantock ridge walk suitable for puppies?

The 6-mile route is best for fit adult dogs. Puppies under 12 months should do a shorter section from Staple Plain. The terrain is even but the distance may be too much for young dogs.
