Dog Walks in Gower

2 walks to explore with your dog in Gower, Swansea

The Gower peninsula was the UK's very first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and over sixty years on, it's still one of the best stretches of coast anywhere in Britain for a dog-walking weekend. Just west of Swansea, this thumb of land pushing out into the Bristol Channel packs cliffs, caves, salt marshes, limestone heaths and some of Europe's finest beaches into about nineteen miles of headland.

What makes Gower special for dogs is the sheer variety of terrain within a very small area. You can be on a three-mile golden beach in the morning and a rocky clifftop headland in the afternoon without driving more than ten minutes. The landscape is shaped by the sea — limestone pushed up into dramatic cliffs on the south coast, gentler dunes and tidal flats to the north. It's also genuinely remote in a way that feels surprising given how close it is to a major city; once you've parked up and walked a mile, you often won't see another person for an hour.

Best Dog Walks in Gower

The Three Cliffs Bay Walk (3 to 5 miles, moderate) is the showstopper — three limestone peaks rising out of a sweeping beach, with a tidal stream winding down to the sea and extraordinary views from the clifftop path above. Time it with low tide and you can walk the length of the beach. The Rhossili Bay and Worms Head (4 to 6 miles, moderate) is arguably even better — a three-mile arc of sand regularly voted one of the best beaches in the world, with the tidal island of Worms Head snaking out at its southern end. Check tide times carefully before crossing the causeway; it's only walkable for a couple of hours either side of low water.

Planning Your Visit

Park at the National Trust's Rhossili car park for Worms Head, or at Penmaen or Southgate for Three Cliffs. Rhossili beach has seasonal dog restrictions on a short central stretch during peak summer — the rest of the bay is dog-friendly year-round and gives you miles of off-lead running. Always check tides before you set off and carry drinking water, as the clifftops have no streams. Sheep graze most of the headland commons, so leads on around livestock. There's a good handful of dog-friendly Gower pubs and cafes dotted through the villages, and dog walks in Gower are the kind that stay with you long after you've left.
