Arundel Castle and River Walk

Arundel is one of the most attractive small towns in Sussex, dominated by its magnificent castle and cathedral. This 3.5-mile circular combines riverside walking along the Arun with views of the castle skyline and the surrounding downland.
The Route
Start in Arundel town centre and follow the riverside path south along the River Arun. The path is flat and easy, passing through water meadows where cattle graze and herons fish. Views of Arundel Castle on its hilltop perch are spectacular from the river path, the medieval silhouette reflected in calm water on still days.
At the Black Rabbit pub, cross the river via South Stoke and return on the western bank. The path climbs gently through farmland with views across the Arun Valley. The return leg passes the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust reserve (dogs not allowed inside) before descending back to the town. The final approach offers classic views of the castle, cathedral and town.

Dogs should be on leads through the water meadows where cattle graze. The riverside paths are excellent for dogs. The River Arun provides swimming opportunities at gentle access points.
