Hardcastle Crags is a National Trust valley of ancient woodland, tumbling streams and gritstone crags near Hebden Bridge. This 3.5-mile circular explores the valley floor and wooded hillsides with a magical, secluded atmosphere.

The Route

Start at the Midgehole car park and follow the path along Hebden Dale. The valley is narrow and wooded, with Hebden Water rushing over rocks beside the path. The ancient beech and oak woodland creates a cathedral-like canopy overhead. Gibson Mill, a former cotton mill now sustainably powered, sits at the heart of the valley.

Continue upstream past the mill, where the valley narrows and the crags become more dramatic. The gritstone outcrops give the valley its name. Cross the stream and return on the opposite bank, climbing through the woodland for elevated views down into the valley. The return path descends gradually back to the car park.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs are welcome on leads in the valley. The stream provides excellent paddling and swimming spots. The woodland paths are interesting for dogs with varied scents and terrain. Gibson Mill's courtyard welcomes dogs. The valley is sheltered and pleasant even in poor weather. Carry water for longer walks as the stream may not be accessible everywhere.

Practical Information

National Trust car park at Midgehole (free for members). Gibson Mill has exhibitions, a cafe and toilets (seasonal). The valley is beautiful in every season: bluebells in spring, green canopy in summer, golden leaves in autumn and frost-covered crags in winter. Paths can be slippery when wet. Hebden Bridge is a short drive away with eclectic shops and cafes.
