Beach Overview

Botany Bay is a hidden gem on the Kent coast, a small sandy cove framed by dramatic white chalk cliffs and sea stacks. The beach is accessed via steps down from the cliff top and has a sense of seclusion despite being close to Broadstairs. At low tide, the beach expands to reveal fascinating rock pools, fossils and chalk formations.

Why Dogs Love It

The intimate scale of Botany Bay makes it a comfortable, contained space for dogs. The rock pools are endlessly fascinating, and the chalk stacks provide interesting terrain to explore. The sand is soft and the water is generally calm. Dogs enjoy investigating the caves and overhangs in the chalk cliffs (but keep away from the cliff base in wet weather as chalk falls are possible).

Dog Access

Dogs are banned from Botany Bay between May and September. Outside this period, dogs are welcome with no restrictions. The quieter months (October to April) are actually the best time to visit, when the dramatic chalk formations are at their most atmospheric and the beach is virtually empty.

Facilities and Access

Small car park at the cliff top (free). Steps down to the beach (steep, not suitable for mobility-impaired visitors). No facilities at the beach. The nearest cafes and shops are in Broadstairs, a short drive or 20-minute walk along the cliff-top path. Toilets available in Broadstairs town centre.
