Foxton Locks Café is a popular canalside café situated at one of the most impressive canal junctions in England. Foxton Locks is a staircase of ten locks on the Grand Union Canal near Market Harborough, and the café occupies a prime position overlooking this remarkable feat of engineering. Watching narrowboats navigate the flight of locks while enjoying a cup of tea and a slice of cake is one of the great simple pleasures of the Leicestershire countryside, and it is made all the better when you have your dog beside you.

Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace, which extends along the canalside with views across the locks and the surrounding meadows. Water bowls are provided, and the atmosphere is thoroughly relaxed - this is a working canal environment where muddy boots and wet dogs are entirely normal. The café is a natural stopping point on the Foxton Locks walk, one of the most popular dog walks in south Leicestershire.

What to Expect

The café serves a straightforward menu of hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, soups, homemade cakes, and light lunches. It is not a gourmet destination, but everything is freshly prepared and honestly priced. The tea and coffee are good, the portions are generous, and there is something comforting about a cup of tea served overlooking a canal. The setting is the real draw. The outdoor seating looks directly onto the lock flight, and the canalside location means there is always something to watch - boats ascending and descending, ducks and moorhens on the water, and fellow walkers passing along the towpath. Location & Visiting

Foxton Locks is located approximately three miles north-west of Market Harborough. There is a car park managed by the Canal & River Trust, which can fill up on summer weekends and bank holidays. The café is open daily during the main season and on selected days during winter - checking before visiting is advisable. The towpath is flat and accessible, making the walk to and from the locks suitable for dogs of all ages and fitness levels. The locks themselves are a Scheduled Ancient Monument and are free to visit.
