The Copper Kettle is a traditional tea room tucked into the centre of Bamburgh village, in the shadow of the castle that dominates this stretch of the Northumberland coast. It's the kind of cosy, old-fashioned place where the scones come warm, the teapots are proper bone china, and a damp spaniel from the beach is as welcome as anyone in hiking boots.

What to Expect

The reputation is built on cream teas: homemade scones, thick clotted cream and jam served on tiered stands alongside loose-leaf tea in proper pots. Beyond that there's a full menu of homemade cakes (the lemon drizzle and the coffee and walnut are both local favourites), light lunches, sandwiches, and soup in winter. The interior is cosy and low-ceilinged with beams and mismatched china on the dresser — the sort of room where you want to linger for an extra cup. There's limited outdoor seating at the front for finer days.

Visiting with Your Dog

The Copper Kettle is a five-minute walk from Bamburgh beach, which is one of the best dog-friendly beaches in England and is off-lead year round. It's the natural pit stop after a long morning on the sand, or before heading up to the castle grounds. Parking is in the village car park or along the green opposite the castle. The cafe gets busy in peak summer and on bank holidays — arriving outside the 12 to 2pm rush is the best way to get a table without waiting. If you're doing a Northumberland coast trip with your dog, this is a genuine highlight and a good reason to build Bamburgh into the itinerary rather than rushing through.
