A Lake District Classic

The Kirkstile Inn sits at the foot of Loweswater and Melbreak in one of the quieter corners of the Lake District. This whitewashed 16th-century inn brews its own ales (Loweswater Gold and Melbreak Bitter are both excellent) and serves hearty Cumbrian food. Dogs are welcome and the atmosphere is relaxed and unpretentious.

The pub is a popular stop for walkers tackling Melbreak, Loweswater or the surrounding fells. Muddy boots and wet dogs are standard, and the flagstone floors and log fires are built for exactly this purpose. The food is generous and well-made, with a focus on local meat and Lakeland produce.

The setting is exceptional, with the fells rising directly behind the pub. On summer evenings, the garden is idyllic. In winter, the bar with its roaring fire is one of the most atmospheric places to be in the entire Lake District.
