One of Britain's Most Unique Pubs

The Square and Compass is a legendary pub in Worth Matravers on the Purbeck coast. Unchanged for generations, it serves beer and cider through a hatch in the corridor. There is no bar counter, no food menu beyond pasties, and no pretension whatsoever.

Dogs are welcome everywhere, including the stone-flagged rooms and the spectacular cliff-top garden with views across to the Isle of Wight. The pub brews its own cider and serves a changing selection of ales. Local fossils are displayed in a small museum at the back.

The pub sits right on the coastal path and is a favourite stop for walkers heading to Dancing Ledge or Chapmans Pool. There is nowhere quite like it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a bar?

No, beer and cider are served through a hatch in the corridor. This is a pub that has resisted modernisation entirely, and is better for it.

Do they serve food?

Only pasties, served from the hatch. Bring your own picnic if you want more. The garden views make up for any lack of menu.
