Delamere Forest is the largest area of woodland in Cheshire, covering 2,400 acres of mixed forest on a sandy ridge between Chester and Northwich. The forest is a remnant of the ancient Forest of Mara and Mondrem and now offers excellent walking and cycling.

The Route

Start from the Forestry England visitor centre and follow the Hunger Hill trail through mature Scots pine and oak woodland. The path passes Blakemere Moss, a mysterious bog lake surrounded by birch trees, then climbs to the high point of the forest at Pale Heights viewpoint. On clear days, views extend to the Welsh hills and Liverpool. Return via the shorter Whitefield Trail through the heart of the forest.

Dog-Friendly Details

Dogs can be off-lead throughout the forest. The sandy paths are gentle on paws and well-drained, making this an excellent wet-weather walk. The forest has streams and ponds where dogs can drink. Mountain bikers share some trails so keep dogs close at junctions. The forest floor of pine needles provides interesting scents.
