Dog Walks in Falmouth
3 walks to explore with your dog in Falmouth, Cornwall
Falmouth sits on the Fal Estuary and has one of the largest natural harbours in the world, with sailing boats coming and going at all hours. For dog owners, the town itself is best enjoyed as a base rather than a walking destination — the narrow streets and busy harbourside are atmospheric but crowded — and the real rewards lie south and west on the Lizard peninsula, which is within easy driving distance and arguably offers the finest coastal walking in the south west.
The Lizard is the most southerly point of mainland Britain, a treeless plateau of wildflower-studded grassland ending in serpentine cliffs above turquoise water. It feels genuinely distinct from the rest of Cornwall — the geology is different, the flora is different, and there's a lonely, end-of-the-world quality even in high summer that makes it unforgettable.
Best Dog Walks in Falmouth
The Kynance Cove Coastal Walk (3 miles, moderate) is one of those walks that actually lives up to its photographs — dropping down from the cliffs through heather and gorse to one of the most beautiful beaches in Britain, with serpentine rock stacks, aquamarine water and proper white sand. For a longer day exploring the tip of the peninsula, the Lizard Point Coastal Walk (6 miles, moderate) starts at Lizard village and loops out to the lighthouse headland with huge sea cliffs, chough-nesting sites and far-reaching views towards the Isles of Scilly on a clear day. Both walks are serious coastal routes with proper exposure, and both are among the best dog walks in Falmouth's wider area.
Planning Your Visit
Kynance Cove has a National Trust car park on the cliffs above the beach (free for members, pay-and-display otherwise), and Lizard Point has parking at Lizard Green in the village. The beach at Kynance has seasonal dog restrictions between Easter and October on the lower section but the cliffs and upper cove remain accessible year-round. The coast path is genuinely exposed — unfenced drops, sudden gusts, and adders basking on the path in warm weather, so awareness matters. After the walk, Kynance Cove Cafe is a cheerful, dog-welcoming stop perched above the beach, and The Old Coastguard at Mousehole is a reliable dog-friendly Falmouth-area pub with harbour views for a longer sit-down meal on the way back.
