Dog Walks in Ambleside

Ambleside sits at the head of Windermere and is probably the most practical walking base in the Lake District with a dog. You get the big-hit fells, the lake shore paths, the riverside woodlands and an absurd number of dog-friendly cafes and pubs — all within a town small enough to walk across in ten minutes.

The town's location is what makes it special: fells rise directly from the streets, the lake is five minutes' walk away, and Langdale, Grasmere and Coniston are all within a short drive. It's where serious fell walkers base themselves for a week, but it's equally good for someone with an older dog who just wants a flat lakeside stroll followed by a decent coffee.

Best Dog Walks in Ambleside

The Loughrigg Fell Walk (3.5 miles, challenging) is the iconic short fell day out — a steep but quick climb to a summit with arguably the best view-to-effort ratio in the Lake District, looking down over Windermere, Grasmere and the Langdale Pikes. For serious walkers with fit dogs, Helvellyn via Striding Edge (8 miles, challenging) is a proper mountain day — genuinely exposed in places, and not suitable for all dogs. For something gentler, the Great Langdale Valley Walk (5 miles, easy) is a flat valley loop with river crossings, drystone walls and the Langdale Pikes as a backdrop. The Grizedale Forest Trail is a shaded alternative for hot days.

Planning Your Visit

Park at the main Ambleside Rothay Park car park or at the Langdale NT car parks for the valley walks. Striding Edge is no place for an inexperienced dog or owner — there's genuine exposure on both sides and a fall would be serious. All the fells have ground-nesting birds and sheep, so leads on open hillside during lambing season (March to May) and whenever livestock is in sight. The Drunken Duck Inn is a famously dog-friendly Ambleside pub with its own brewery, and Baysbrown Farm Campsite is a brilliant base for a weekend in Langdale with your dog.
