Dog Walks in Castleton

9 walks to explore with your dog in Castleton, Derbyshire

Castleton sits in a natural amphitheatre at the head of the Hope Valley, surrounded by some of the most dramatic scenery in the Peak District. It's the classic dog-walking village — tiny, stone-built, ringed by famous peaks, and with footpaths heading out of the village square in every direction. If you've only got one weekend to show someone why the Peak District is brilliant, Castleton is where you take them.

The village is a honeypot, which means it gets busy in summer and at weekends, but it's still where the walking starts for the best-known ridge in the national park. Visitors tend to underestimate just how much you can do from Castleton without needing to move the car all day.

Best Dog Walks in Castleton

The Mam Tor and Great Ridge Walk (4 to 6 miles, moderate) is the one — a stepped flagstone path onto the "shivering mountain," then a gentle ridge walk with 360-degree views to Lose Hill, ending with a descent past Hollins Cross. The Mam Tor Circular Walk offers the same summit with a different return. For something lower and more unusual, the Cave Dale Walk (3 to 5 miles, easy to moderate) starts right in the village square and takes you into a dry limestone gorge below Peveril Castle. The Winnats Pass Walk is a short, dramatic route through a geological wonder of narrow limestone cliffs.

Planning Your Visit

Castleton's main car park is at the edge of the village and fills early — arriving before 9am on weekends avoids disappointment. The ridge is exposed, so dogs can overheat quickly in summer; carry water and aim for early or late in the day. Sheep graze the ridge, so leads are essential on the tops. Castleton has several dog-welcoming pubs and cafes for a well-earned pint afterwards, and dog-friendly Castleton accommodation options are plentiful if you want to stretch a day trip into a weekend.
