This 4.5-mile Dartmoor walk links two of the national park's most iconic tors, crossing open moorland with panoramic views extending to the coast on clear days.

The Route

Begin at the Haytor car park and climb the short path to the summit of Haytor Rocks, Dartmoor's most visited tor at 457 metres. The granite outcrop is a popular spot for rock climbers and the views are superb. Descend northeast and cross the moorland to Hound Tor, a dramatic cluster of weathered granite stacks said to have inspired Conan Doyle's The Hound of the Baskervilles.

Below Hound Tor, explore the remains of a medieval village, abandoned in the 14th century. The stone foundations of longhouses are clearly visible. Return via the old granite tramway, a level path that once carried quarried granite from Haytor quarries to the Stover Canal.

Dog-Friendly Details

This is superb off-lead territory for dogs. The open moorland gives them space to run and explore. Dartmoor ponies graze freely so dogs must be under close control near livestock. There are no fences or roads for most of the route. Carry water as natural sources on the moor can be scarce in dry weather.

Practical Information

The Haytor car park is pay and display with a cafe and toilets. The moorland is exposed and weather changes rapidly, so bring waterproofs and layers even in summer. Navigation is straightforward in clear weather but a map is recommended in mist. The granite tramway section is flat and easy walking.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can dogs go off lead on Dartmoor?

Yes, the open access moorland is excellent for off-lead dogs. Keep them under close control near Dartmoor ponies and livestock. Recall must be reliable.

Is the Haytor walk suitable in winter?

Yes, but conditions can be harsh. The moor is exposed to weather and mist can descend quickly. Carry a map, compass and warm layers. The views in winter can be stunning.
